Weddings in Vancouver are a tricky thing. When 9 months out of the year are filled with seemingly endless rain, it means that most people try to plan it so their wedding falls during those 3 (potentially) rain-free months of summer. For us that means an insanely busy shoot schedule. This year was no exception to the craziness. So many shoots, double the amount of meetings, and quite a bit of travel time. Thank goodness we love what we do and are able to do it together. The season was awesome and we're now entering the recovery season (aka non-stop editing in the dungeon season). Looking back on this ssummer, one wedding that truly stood out to us was Lindsey and Matt’s. A beautiful couple who love school and their cats and who let us into their lives to tell their story. We hope you enjoy their film.
Thunder Bay Ontario definitely lived up to its name when we went there last month to film Priscilla and Mikes wedding. The day started out majorly stormy but luckily by the time they had their first look the rain let up and the sky looked amazing! (Always a sucker for interesting clouds!) Since Priscilla and Mike live in Winnipeg, we had only met them on Skype prior to the wedding day. We liked them a lot online and were excited to find that they were the exact same in person- a funny, light hearted and easy going couple who were so much fun to be around.
These two love food and friends. They proved this to us right away when they invited us to join them and their bridal party in a 6 or 7 course brunch in the middle of their wedding day! This made us like them EVEN more ;)
The day went from storm, to clear, back to storm, and finally to overcast for their beautiful outdoor Gammondale Farm wedding. Their ceremony was one of my favourites ever as their personalities came out so much in many different yet subtle ways. These two are the best! A perfect pair so in love and so happy in their life together. Watch their film! :)
Marriage is a blessing. Its exciting. Its an adventure. But it is also hard work, and it is a choice. Janelle and Dustin are an incredibly fun couple who are beyond in love, but they also know how serious of a commitment marriage is and worked really hard at their relationship pre-marriage. It was really amazing to hear their vows, and watching them together – they have something really special. They also chose a very special location for their wedding – Painted Rock Winery in Penticton - this place has some of the most amazing views I’ve seen! Love and beautiful views. That's its. That's all you need for a successful wedding :)
This film is a must see. So see it!
For all you tech heads out there, this is what the film was shot on...
2 Canon C100s 1 5D mkii All Canon L Series Prime Lenses A couple of select shots with the Sony FS700* Manfrotto Monopods and Tripods Glidecam HD2000 Kessler Crane Pocket Dolly
*We were especially honoured to be able to tell this story because Dustin is a filmmaker himself. We talked with him a bunch and gushed over storytelling, gear, and capturing images. One thing that we were thrilled to learn was that Dustin asked a colleague of his to come and setup a Slo-Mo booth at the wedding. What this also meant was having a FS700 on hand for portions of the wedding day. If you're into this stuff, we are sure you spotted the shots in the film. We decided to choose specific moments that we wanted to slow down with purpose to enhance the story. (Although that camera is a ton of fun and it was tempting to shoot everything in slow motion. Luckily we have our iPhones for that!)
The new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been out for a few weeks now. Like many of you we were eagerly awaiting the announcement so we could upgrade to this shiny new toy. One thing I didn't expect to hear during the Apple keynote was this new slow-motion feature. I thought to myself... "hwhaaaa? 240fps in a iPhone? I'll believe it when I see it". A while ago Erin and I booked our annual fall trip to Disneyland to detox a bit after an amazing/super busy summer. In case you didn't know we're kind of crazy when it comes to Disneyland (yes we are those people). So after we received our new iPhones we thought "what better way to test out this thing than in Disneyland?". So away we went.
Now I could go through a bunch of specs and features about the phone/camera but I'd rather let the film do the talking. Yes it's only 720p and yes 240fps is a bad idea in low light, but it's a flipping phone! We were sincerely stunned at the results while shooting and editing this piece. One thing is for sure, this easily replaces any point and shoot video camera for us. Hands down. Take a look at the film below...
It's pretty amazing that this iPhone, something that is with us wherever we go, allows us to be creative and produce something like this at anytime. To think that millions of people have a device in their pocket that can shoot this kind of footage is mind boggling. It's exciting to see what technology can do in the right hands and we are so curious and excited to see how this technology will improve in the future.
If you have any questions about how the film was put together, feel free to leave a comment below.

A huge thank you to Jonny Dylan Hughes for letting us use his incredible song "Dove" for this film. Check out his band camp here!
Before we meet with couples for our final meeting before the big day, we send them a little questionnaire to fill out so we can find out as much about them and their wedding as we possibly can. Some couples answer only the necessary questions, some write only brief responses, and some give us exactly what we hope for. Nikki and Rob gave us exactly what we hoped for and more! They had so many fantastic and unique things planned that reflected them and their relationship which got us excited to start shaping their story. Buried in the info was one line "Oh, you may want to look out for a tiny Winnie the Poo theme - we're having a poem read and our favours are little jars of honey..." Right away we thought this was the ca-utest 'unofficial theme' and were hoping to be able to incorporate it into the film. Little did we know that this would become the through line of their film. This one poem said more about this couples' relationship than we could ever have hoped to find in any speech.
Nikki and Robs love story is SO cute. So dang cute. Piglet and Pooh cute. We hope you like it.
A enormous thank you to Margot and her team from Petite Pearl Events! We had a blast working with you all! Thanks for being awesome :D
Also this was our second time working with the wonderful duo that is Blush Photography and loved every second! Kristy + Ken you guys are awesome!
OK on to part 2! Loowa + Joey's Same Day Edit! First, we think you should watch the film...
As you know we always harp on about storytelling and the importance of being prepared, and SDE's are perhaps the best example of the impact pre-production can have. There is a lot to juggle on any given wedding shoot... being at the right place when you need to be, traveling between locations, lugging all of your gear around, shooting with purpose, capturing audio from multiple sources, etc. But on a SDE we add the massive undertaking of creating a film the same day of the wedding, and that can feel quite daunting. But if you know the story you want to tell and are prepared, it can be so exilirating and dare I say fun! We wanted to share this post to give you a little insight into what goes into putting together a same day edit.
First off is the plan of attack. We didn't want to just go into this shoot blindly and hoping for the best. We wanted to be as prepared as possible. Fortunately we were able to meet and hang out with Loowa + Joey multiple times before the big day, which really helped us get an idea of what was important to them. During these hangouts they told us about how they were planning on exchanging cards + gifts with eachother. We knew this would be a key part in the telling of their story so we wanted to make sure we captured this moment well. A big part of that was making sure we had great audio so we decided to use small lavelier mics and placed them under their clothes. This added a bit of trickyness as it meant we had more gear to carry with us and had to take the time to mic them up, but we feel it makes a huge difference and really helps keep the audience in the story. Crappy sound is all too common and is often the first thing that takes someone out of the story.
We also learned from Loowa + Joey that the guys would be doing a little pre-wedding workout + swim in the morning. We really wanted to make sure we were there to capture this since it reveals how Joey + Loowa love to have fun. Even on a potentially stressful day, Joey still wanted to just be a kid and play in the pool with his buddies. That says so much about him in such a simple way.
One thing we didn't learn about until a couple days before the wedding was that they would be getting a big ol' school bus to drive them around for the day. Seriously... a legit big yellow school bus? Amazing! We knew we had to incorporate this childlike element into their SDE. What better way to show how these two are basically two kids just having fun?
Knowing all of this ahead of time, along with making notes, shot lists, song selections ahead of time (thank you Marmoset!), edit layouts, and having the proper equipment allowed for us to tell an depth story in an engaging way.
These are merely a few things we wanted to highlight about putting together L+J's SDE. We also had tons of help from the amazing crew of Filosophi who ensured we had everything we needed and that the schedule worked for us. As always it was a blast working along side our friend's the amazing photography duo Shari + Mike! We also want to give a huge thank you to our pal Andrew Noon for helping us on this shoot and for being flat out awesome!
Loowa + Joey, you two are so wonderful and insanely fun to be around. Your wedding day was beautiful and we were so happy to be there with you. Thank you for letting us tell your story!
We don't often get the chance to make engagement films, so when we do it's quiiiite exciting. We get to hang with this awesome couple more then we usually would, get to know so much about them and see them interact with each other. We get to hear their story from BOTH points of view. All of this was definitely a big help for us as we created their engagement film but it was a HUGE help for us as we planned for their Same Day Edit. So much of storytelling is the work you put into pre-production and so we wanted to make sure we knew all about these two before the wedding day. But more on the SDE later... The day we spent filming with Loowa + Joey was the best. This couple is radical. Not just rad, but full on radical. They are hilarious. So easy going. So much fun. I spent most of the shoot laughing at them from afar while Shari + Mike fought with them to make a normal face for a photo. But for us this was gold! Its so rare that a couple can actually be themselves-completely themselves-while trying to act natural in front of 2 (or in this case 4) cameras.
Loowa and Joey- you nailed it. Such a fun shoot. Such a fun film. Check back soon for part two with Loowa + Joey's SDE!
I’ve been going to Canmore Alberta since I was a kid. My great grandparents immigrated to Canmore from Italy back in the 1920’s where they raised my Grandpa and his two brothers in this adorable pink and white house. Growing up I can recall being specifically TOLD (on numerous occasions) to ‘look at the mountains!’ on our drives out. I remember always being distinctly irritated at this command as I didn’t much care for scenery and would rather continue to hear about what shenanigans Harry and Ron were getting into back at Hogwarts. I would feign interest and yell out the occasional ‘wow’, ‘that's so amazing’, ‘cool’, simply to appease the parentals. The mountains were cool I guess, but they were just mountains. Whatever. I don’t know what happened to me. Maybe its because I’m older, maybe its because I’m slowly turning into my mom, or maybe its because I’m a cinematographer now who see’s everything in life in ‘shots’ but OH MY GOSH HAVE YOU LOOKED AT THE MOUNTAINS?! Wow! They’re so amazing! They’re so cool! Canmore blew my socks off this time. One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen and served as the perfect backdrop for Robyn and Joe's wedding.
Robyn and Joe are from Ontario. They love the outdoors, friends + family, cold beer, and having fun. Those 5 things combined EQUAL Canmore! So it's no surprise that they decided on that beautiful city for their wedding.
The first time we spoke with Robyn and Joe was on skype last year where we instantly realized that they were the most laid back people er-ver. They were clearly in love, clearly excited about getting married but mostly excited to spend the rest of their lives together :) They are 2 seriously wonderful people. The best kind of people. We were so excited to get to know them and be a part of their day. You need to see this.
This was our first wedding working with the amazingly amazing Jarusha Brown Photography. We had a blasty blast working with her and hope to do so a ton more!
It was also our first wedding working with the lovely Callandra of Post Card Weddings + Events and had the greatest time doing so. Thanks so much Callandra for throwing an incredible event!
When we approach our films, we often look for the strongest elements that will serve the story. But sometimes stories are best told by the couple themselves. Corinne + Adam have a beautiful history and we knew it would be the perfect narrative to their film. These two are passionate, artistic, + laid back and that truly showed at their wedding. Every part of this wedding had Corinne + Adam's stamp on it. From a piñata instead of a wedding cake, to a paint-a-portrait station. Also because of their shared passion for music, they had some of the greatest music I've ever heard at a wedding. Corinne and Adam also decided to forgo a traditional dinner + speech portion of the evening and instead, held the most beautiful and unique ceremony I've ever seen. There was no aisle, there was no minister, just friends and family sitting with them, telling stories and sharing memories. It was truly beautiful. Then the couple stood up and shared their own story.
Oh yeah and they hung out with some Alpacas sooooooo you pretty much can't not watch this film!
It was an honour to watch this story unfold. Thank you Corinne + Adam!
Also a huge thank you to the amazing team of vendors...

I feel like I really don’t need to introduce this film at all. Everyone I know has heard about or at least seen an instagram of this wedding. It was something else. The tent alone-can we really call it a tent? Bigger than any ballroom I’ve ever seen! It was an absolutely-amazing-over-the-top-blow-your-mind wedding. But something that most people don’t know is how beautiful Claire and Dave’s story is. Its really easy for the story to get lost sometimes, and a wedding can become more about the guests having a good time than celebrating the couple. At this wedding however, it felt like despite all the (gorgeous and perfect I may add) enormity of the day, we got to see into this incredibly private and beautiful relationship between these two (almost) high school sweethearts.
Take a look! The wedding is gorgeous, but the story is my favorite part :) -Erin
